Description
Shewring, W. H. (Walter). The Water Meads: Verses. Ditchling, West Sussex: St Dominic’s Press, 1927. First Edition. Qtr Cloth & Paper Covered Bds.. Very Good. (viii), 16pp. No.43/100 numbered copies printed in 2 colours on J. Batchelor’s handmade paper. The original J.(Joseph Batchelor), the Kent paper maker, was Morris’ choice for the books of his Kelmscott Press. Shewring was a classicist & translator (most notably of the Odyssey). Tipped onto the front pastedown is Shewring’s card printed with his name & Corpus Christi College, Oxford to which he has added, in ink, his Bristol address. There is no Gill device used for this, his first publication, which, with our hindsight, seems curious given their close association (though it must simply have predated it). He would go on to both edit Gill’s letters & introduce his bibliography as well as be appointed his literary executor. Some foxing evident on the cloth of the spine; seemingly from the glue used in binding.
