AB108656, Wilkie William, The Epigoniad: a Poem in Nine Parts, Edinburgh, 1757, Hamilton Balfour & Neill, First Edition, Full Calf, Very Good, 8vo, xlii, 289pp. Written in the style of the Iliad this; his first and most celebrated publication, earned its author the sobriquet ‘ The Scottish Homer.’ Contemporary bookplate of John Adam Esquire and that of the author of Fame’s Twilight: Studies of Nine Men of Letters; Kenneth Newton Colvile. The latter is of a hybridised grotesquerie with the slavering head of Shakespeare and the body of a (?) ; front paw upraised, tail outstretched behind & legs like cricket pads upon a sledge containing the uneaten remains of Marlowe. (with all sins; descriptive, heraldic & otherwise, acknowledged!) Stub of half title remaining; the rest removed long enough ago to allow offsetting from the title to the verso of ffep. Offsetting from fold-ins on front and rear boards. Otherwise very clean unfoxed text. All edges speckled. Joints cracked but holding & slight loss of leather at head of spine though headband secure. New maroon morocco label titled in gilt.
