Hunt’s introduction to the sonnet runs to over 90pp. to which Lee adds an appraisal of the American practitioners of the form. The anthology confines itself to sonnets composed in English. Amongst many others there are contributions from Wyatt, Sidney, Raleigh, Spenser, Shakespeare, Jonson, Milton, Gray, Bowles, Coleridge, Lamb, Wordsworth, Southey, Shelley, Byron, Hunt himself, the Tennysons, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Allingham & Longfellow. All edges marbled. Spine recently rebacked in panelled calf with raised bands ruled in blind. Maroon & black morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Whilst published simultaneously in London & Boston shortly after Hunt’s death this UK edition which contains an undertaking to pass royalties to his family appears less common.
