This text draws on John Riley’s “Collected Works”. It traces the poet’s development from his first significant collection, “Ancient and Modern” (1967) to his last pieces which appeared posthumously. “Czargrad”, features in its final form, and “Ways of Approaching”, “That is Today” and “A Meeting” are included in their entirety.
