Near Fine. 53pp. Intriguingly inscribed by Longley for Anthony Thwaite: “For Anthony who published this volume – affectionately & with great respect, Michael 8.v.99″ Presumably, Thwaite, who advised Tom Rosenthal when taking over at Secker & Warburg in 1979, was instrumental in its choice for publication. Laid in is a postcard from Longley dated 11.xii.79 thanking Thwaite for his radio review of Echo Gate as well as a piece in the Observer” I don’t expect to read or hear a more thoughtful account of the book…You have been kind to me over the years, and I appreciate it a great deal.” Also laid in is a great photograph of them sat together on a verandah cuddling over coffee with what looks like an Alp in the background. Lastly, there is the PBS bulletin with Longley writes… on The Echo Gate along with Mahon on Poems 1962-1978 & Craig Raine on A Martian… A few very light spots of foxing on head edge of text-block & Thwaite’s surname on ffep. Dust jacket fractionally handled. An excellent association copy.
