The poem’s subject is Allison B. Krause; one of the 4 fatal casualties of the Kent State University shootings when the National Guard opened fire on antiwar protesters on May 4th 1970 which Gildzen witnessed. Inscribed “For Lee Harwood who was at Kent before, Alex Gildzen.” Harwood & Gildzen had planned but never produced an anthology of list poems. The epigraph from Duncan’s poem Persephone begins “We remember in symbols such violence…” Folded twice for mailing in its original envelope dated the day following publication; 14th August 1970. Very slightly handled.
