Description

AB112889, Hopkins Gerard Manley; Bridges Robert (editor), Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, London, 1918, Humphrey Milford, First Edition, Half Buckram & Paper Covered Boards, Near Fine, Poor, pp. (viii), 124 + (ii) tissue guarded portraits + (iv) facsimile holograph poems. 750 copies. Uncut. Ownership signature in the small neat hand of minor Georgian religious poet Oliver Davies dated March 1919 on ffep, fractional offsetting at rfep & very occasional foxing mostly at fore edge of facsimile pages otherwise a joyously clean, bright copy. Transparent archival acetate covered brittle, rubbed & splitting dust jacket darkened at spine with tiny fragments missing at fore edge corners, small half inch piece absent at head of spine (‘s’ from Bridges lost) & most significantly a 2.5 inch section missing at tail of spine (‘Poems of’ gone) tapering downward slightly across the front panel to 2 inches at fore edge; inner flaps and rear panel unaffected. As this was one of the few copies purchased immediately following publication & unusually has been safely protected by its dust jacket in the same family library ever since (the loss to dj was not suffered until recently when the library was sold & subsequently offered to us) & not one of those left languishing unsold on the publisher’s shelves, the old price was not torn from the tail of the dust jacket spine & subsequently there has been no toning to the spine of the book itself. To sum up: an exceptional copy of a collection pivotal to the development of modern poetry in a dust jacket that would make a modern first collector leap from a tall building.
